The Impact of the TARL Approach in Blantyre’s Public Primary Schools

In 2024, Rays of Hope embarked on an ambitious journey to revolutionize classroom learning by introducing the Teaching at the Right Level (TARL) approach in 172 public primary schools across Blantyre Urban and Rural. This initiative aims to reshape traditional education practices and enhance literacy and numeracy outcomes for primary school learners. What began as a pilot program in just two schools—Chilala and Likulu Primary Schools—has now grown into a transformative movement, reaching 13,808 learners across all classes in over 40 schools.

The TARL approach is designed to meet learners where they are, focusing on their current learning levels rather than their age or grade. Teachers have embraced this model, creating dynamic and engaging classroom environments that foster improved comprehension and skill development. Classrooms have been transformed into interactive learning spaces where students actively participate in activities tailored to their specific needs, resulting in notable improvements in foundational literacy and numeracy.

Government Recognition and Support

The Ministry of Education has recognized the impact of this initiative and is actively supporting its implementation. Their dedication to monitoring and supervising the program ensures that TARL is effectively integrated into mainstream teaching practices. Government officials are playing a crucial role in overseeing the process, ensuring that the approach is well-executed and sustainable.

Continuous Training and Support for Teachers
