Removing financial and non-financial barriers among secondary school students
Bursary student at Likhubula sec school
The Academic Inclusion was started to remove financial and non-financial barriers to accessing secondary school education.
The initiative started in 2012 when the first afterschool cohort completed primary school, but they could not because of lack of school fees. We only managed to support 12 students, but we are now assisting 250 students every year.
All the program participants take exams to assess their academic proficiency. Then, the team recruits those who score high and are also from poor homes. The exercise relies on our engagement with the teachers to give a true reflection of our assessments. Upon the endorsement of the teachers, we provide the scholarship. To ensure ownership, we do not provide 100% scholarship – we only provide school related fees. The parents provide supplies, and funds for amenities
